Poetry Showcase: “Pretend”

Posted on 07. May, 2013 by in Poetry

Pretend, by Engi Hassaan

I can pretend that I don’t miss you, that enough time has passed,
I can pretend that I’ve moved on now, made peace with the past.

I can pretend that I don’t rest my head, and watch you in my sleep,
I can pretend that all the memories, are ones that I don’t keep.

I can pretend that I don’t imagine, a life where you’re still with us,
I can pretend that you having parted, hasn’t affected us that much.

I can pretend that I don’t feel you, in every corner of my soul,
I can pretend that this aching in my chest, is something to ignore.

I can pretend that I don’t suffer, pretend that I don’t cry,
I can pretend that I am pretending; pretending you didn’t die.
