Are you the type of person who loves to learn more about our vast universe and its neverending mysteries? Are you fascinated by the sea of stars hovering above us in the night sky? If you are, then there is good news for you. The ”GUC Astronomy Club” is now being initiated and vows to completely change how we see the world that we live in. We have interviewed its founder, Kareem Rashwan, to learn more about this exciting club.
With a feeling of pride and accomplishment on his face, Rashwan explained how Astronomy has always been his passion for as long as he can remember, confessing that his biggest dream was to become an astronaut. He explained that the idea of founding the club started when he attended lectures and seminars at the AUC organized by the AUC Astronomy Club. After contacting and sharing ideas with its organizers at the AUC, he was eager to form a similar entity here at the GUC. And not long after, lots of serious planning was well under way.
When asked about the aim and vision of the club, Rashwan said, “GUC Astronomy Club aims to attract students to the exciting science of astronomy and astrophysics and to broaden their perspectives about the universe through both lectures and fun activities.”
Alongside planning on holding seminars and lectures by notable speakers on campus, he revealed that the club aspires to organize stargazing trips to treasured places like Saint Catherine and El-Fayoum in the future.
When asked about an estimate date for the club to open its doors for new members, Rashwan stated that the recruitment phase will probably start by the beginning of the next semester, as there are still some final approvals needed in order to start the club financially.
However, he is pleased to announce that his club is already gaining popularity before even setting up a campaign, “Until now, we reached nearly 500 likes on our Facebook page just by word of mouth!”
Finally, Rashwan invites everyone to share his enthusiasm for space and its endless wonders, explaining how numerous contributions to Astronomy were done by Arabs throughout history, and how many stars are named after Arabic scientists and astronomers.
“We should all have this passion to explore our universe, for astronomy is truly an incredible field.”
